Teaching and special events at Namgyal-Ithaca include a broad range of opportunities for those interested in learning about Tibetan Buddhism and those hoping to advance their practice.
Teachings are anchored by the Fall-Spring class schedule which includes once a week meetings lasting 10-12 weeks. Courses range from introductory sessions on Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and practice to challenging readings and discussions of concepts in both Sutra and Tantra. Beyond classes, there are Weekend Intensives on specific topics in Tibetan Buddhism, two annual Kalachakra Retreats, and the annual Mansfield Lecture on Science and Buddhism. (Please follow this link to learn more about housing types and costs).
Special Events include annual celebrations (Losar, Uprising Day, His Holiness Birthday, and Tibet Day), as well as ritual ceremonies, for example Saka Dawa (a celebration in honor of the day Shakyamuni Buddha was born, became enlightened, and died), demonstrations of Tibetan arts and dance, and construction of a Kalachakra Sand mandala. Namgyal Monastery currently offers two week-long summer retreats here in Once Dü Khor Choe Ling
monastery will be able to offer retreats on-site as well as additional private retreats.
The summer retreats have been offered since Namgyal opened in 1992, and are among the most popular of all events held by the monastery. Each year Namgyal will provide a week-long retreat that provides a tantric empowerment and instruction in on the associated sadhana practice.
In addition to the core curriculum of classes, Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies offers weekend intensive teachings on topics from both eastern and western traditions. The weekend intensives are geared to students of every level, often attempting to bring difficult topics into focus for the non-specialist.
Our two-year core curriculum provides foundational classes in Tibetan Buddhism including sutra teachings, philosophical tenets and Tibetan language. The classes are taught in the evening, by the resident Namgyal monks. The core curriculum of classes is open to men and women who wish to enroll in full or part-time study, taking as few as one course, or all of the courses offered in a given semester.
Namgyal has been hosting guided Buddhist pilgrimages since 2002, with recent tours to Mongolia and Dharamsala, India. The pilgrimages are unique in that they are limited in size, which helps to facilitate the group’s entrance into various locations and teachings that would otherwise not be possible on larger tours.
On special Buddhist holidays, the monastery celebrates with Namgyal students, community, and local Tibetans, offering puja’s and prayer ceremonies appropriate to each event. Additionally, the monastery offers special events and teachings on interfaith, and science and Buddhism symposiums, and is continually extending programming to meet the needs of students in bringing related topics of interest to the public.
