A project on the Library and Museum of His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Purpose and Environment:
Namgyal Institute of Buddhist Studies, Ithica and Duekor Choeling are based in Ithica, US. The compound in which they are located is very quiet and peaceful, vast and beautiful, and is ideally located near the University of Ithica and Cornell University. Each of these two universities has more than 33000 students. Considering the differences that could be made due to its unique location, and upon seeing the possibility of serving the needs of many people, after much discussion and debate, Namgyal Monastery in India and Namgyal Institute for Buddhist Studies in Ithica have agreed on a plan to build a library and a museum which focus on the works and visions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This would be a step towards realizing the great visions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama as well as a gesture of repaying a tiny portion of his compassion. The abbot and the Executive Council of Namgyal Monastery received this plan with a genuine appreciation. After this was presented to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Holiness gave his consent on 28th April, 2016 and granted the name The Library and Museum of the 14th Dalai Lama.
A library to house the works of His Holiness:
Like the rays of the Sun, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s activities have spread far and wide throughout the world. In setting beings from their miseries into the proper path of joy and happiness, the teachings of His Holiness are like the supreme of all medicines to relieve sicknesses. Be they ordinary or more privileged ones, whoever comes across his teachings would be relieved of their miseries for the time being, and in the long run an indelible seed of joy is planted in them. Thus, as the foundation for a lasting source of benefit and joy are the activities of his speech, they are the supreme ones among all his divine activities.
The strings of advice and the teachings of His Holiness are not confined to few individuals, but are meant for individuals, societies, and the world at large. As His Holiness’s visions encompass the wellbeing of all, for now and in the long run, apart from his teachings and talks, even his casual conversions were spoken with concerns for the wellbeing of others at heart. To suit different faiths, intentions, mental inclinations and aspirations of various beings of different intellectual capacities and latent potentials, the words of His Holiness have the unique features of serving as elixirs to relieve the mental fatigues of many beings, or as swords to clear away their doubts, or as the light to illuminate their ignorant minds, or as the supreme nectar to relieve their sorrows. His words are like the key to unlock the vast expanse of knowledge, easy to understand and grasp, and are impeccable instructions easy to relate to. For illuminating the difficult points, unraveling the hidden meanings, and distinguishing the subtle points [of classical Buddhist treatises], the words of His Holiness are all just amazing instructions. They are the décor that pleases the eyes, ears and mind of sentient beings. The talks that His Holiness gives are like nectars that address others’ concerns and fulfill the wishes of millions of people of diverse races, places, languages, traditions, religions, and fields of expertise. As those are like priceless jewels, a library— containing the classical volumes of His Holiness, his talks as well as all books in different languages authored by His Holiness— is essential and of utmost importance. Thus, the library will become a treasury to house all works related to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Museum on the activities of His Holiness:
Since 1954 until 2015, His Holiness has been to 64 countries around the world and has made 477 tours around the globe to different places. In all of them, His Holiness has spoken widely on his three commitments and universal responsibility, and has given extensive teachings as well as numerous empowerments, oral transmissions and instructions. His Holiness has met eminent leaders, acclaimed scholars and experts in different fields, top religious leaders of different faiths, and many renowned artists from all over the world. In total, His Holiness has met with more than 500 eminent personalities. His activities are infinite and profound, and are beyond the perceptions of ordinary beings. Time and again His Holiness was voted as the most influential personality in the entire world. His Holiness has won multitudes of accolades, appreciation and respect for his activities and has a stock of more than 154 awards and honorary degrees to his credit. The religious activities of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama far exceed the religious activities of all the previous Dalai Lamas combined together. On top of his Tibetan subjects, His Holiness has followers from all over the world and is now widely known as the World Peace Champion. Thus, a museum that presents the vast activities of His Holiness is greatly needed.
The library and the museum will also include the entire volume of Sutras [direct translations of the Buddha’s teachings] as well as the entire volume of Shastras [their commentaries by Indian masters]. As far as the contents of the Sutras and Shastras are concerned, His Holiness has divided them into three sections, the science that comes from Buddhism, the philosophy of Buddhism and the religious practice of Buddhism. The first two sections can be subjects of academic study for all, irrespective of whether they believe in religion or not. In this regard, His Holiness has initiated a project to compile together all relevant study materials that would contribute to the enrichment of the academia of the world. Namgyal Institute aims to convene conferences and seminars to discuss them in the future. Furthermore, it aims to impart education on Tibetan culture, religion and language to the Tibetan youths, and conduct Buddhist study programs to Tibetans and non-Tibetans alike.
Without the support of our well-wishers, the fulfillment of these three important projects would not become a reality. We therefore welcome all kinds of support, from individuals as well as from groups or organizations.
