There he studied with Gen Lobsang Nyima, the 100th throne holder of Je Rinpoche (Lama Tsong-khapa). After finishing his examination of Master of Buddhist Sutra and Tantra in the year 2000 the Abbot of Namgyal Monastery selected him to be the teacher of Namgyal Monastery students. He taught Namgyal Monastery students both Sutra and Tantra for five years. From 2002-2005 he held several positions within the monastery including education director. Tenzin Choesang has taught and studied at many places across India and around the world. At present he is the President of Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies, Ithaca, New York & Buddhist Chaplin at Cornell University
Kalachakra is a unique and important system of highest yoga tantra in Tibetan Buddhism. Historically, Kalachakra is closely associated with the Dalai Lamas and with Namgyal Monastery. The Seventh Dalai Lama began providing Kalachakra Initiations to large communities of ordained and lay practitioners in Tibet during the 18th century. Since then, subsequent Dalai Lamas have continued this tradition. The current Dalai Lama, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, has bestowed over thirty Kalachakra Initiations throughout the world. The monks now residing at Namgyal Ithaca have assisted with Kalachakra Initiations since 1989.
As the home monastery of the Dalai Lamas, Namgyal Monastery has come to specialize in training monks in the teachings, practice and ritual ceremony of Kalachakra. Following their basic training in the great texts and treatises of Buddhism and Buddhist philosophy, Namgyal monks receive teachings and training in tantric practice. As within all Geluk schools of Tibetan Buddhism, they are trained in the tantric practices of Yamantaka, Chakrasamvara and Guhyasamaja. In addition, the Namgyal monks receive extensive teachings and training in all aspects of the Kalachakra tantric practices. This includes construction of the Kalachakra sand mandala and performing the rituals and dances of the Kalachakra Ceremony that precede the Kalachakra Initiation.
Every year, Namgyal monks perform the Kalachakra Ritual Ceremony at the home monastery in India during the time the Kalachakra Teachings were given by Buddha Shakyamuni. The Kalachakra Ritual Ceremony is comprised of ten days of rituals and practices, including construction of a Kalachakra Sand Mandala. These rituals and practices are the same as those performed before a Kalachakra Initiation.
This year the Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies, Ithaca will take a group of students to observe and/or participate in the full Kalachakra Ritual Ceremony at Namgyal Monastery, India in Dharamsala. Observing the Kalachakra Ritual Ceremony serves as a symbolic means to help connect students in a deeper and subtler way to the different levels of the Kalachakra teachings and practices. During the first week the monks will perform the Earth Ritual Prayers and construct the Kalachakra Sand Mandala. During the second week, Namgyal monks will perform the Ritual Offerings Dance and the actual Kalachakra Ritual Ceremony.
Students who wish to attend should have previously received the Kalachakra Initiation. Different levels of participation and teachings will be available to students depending on their previous exposure to Kalachakra teachings and practice. Students who have received the Kalachakra Initiation, but have limited experience with Kalachakra teachings and practice will be able to observe portions of the Kalachakra Ritual Ceremony, receive teachings on Kalachakra during other portions and have opportunity to visit other Tibetan Buddhist Monasteries in the area. Those who have had previous teachings on the Kalachakra and have familiarity with Kalachakra practice may participate in recitation of texts in Tibetan with the Namgyal monks throughout the entire Kalachakra Ritual Ceremony, The schedule of practice during the Kalachakra Ritual Ceremony is quite intensive, so students wishing to participate should be prepared for long days of sitting and recitation. Participation in various activities will be up to individual students.
