Evening Meditation takes place from 5:15-6:00 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week, and is free and open to the public. Meditation begins promptly at 5:15 PM. Please leave shoes, and coats, etc. in the vestibule outside the shrine room.
Evening meditation at Namgyal Monastery consists of the following:
- The monks start the meditation with 7-8 minutes of preliminary chanted prayers for cultivating a proper motivation.
- This is followed by silent meditation (35-45 minutes). A bell is rung at the end of the silent part of the meditation.
- The monks then recite prayers of dedication and auspiciousness (approximately 5 minutes).
- Following these prayers, there is a short pause. Should you wish to depart, please feel free to do so at this time.
Although there is no fee for attendance at meditations, the recommended minimum donation is one dollar. Donations help to cover the costs of maintaining the monastery and are greatly appreciated. Please place donations in the donation jar or box, located in the vestibule just outside the shrine room.
On the first Friday of each month, the monks will offer a free meditation instruction at 4:30 pm, followed by regular meditation at 5:15-6:00 pm, and a free thirty-minute social tea from 6:00-6:30 pm.
