The three principle aspects contain the essential meaning of all Buddha's teachings, both sutras and tantras. The terms that are often used to characterize these three in Tibetan Buddhism are Renunciation, Bodhicitta, and Wisdom Realizing Emptiness. The wish for freedom from what binds us in the cycle of suffering, the altruistic intention to be of ultimate benefit to others, and the wisdom to understand the ultimate nature of reality constitute the three principle aspects of the path to enlightenment. Renunciation is the remedy for craving and dissatisfaction; Bodhicitta is the medicine that conquers the extreme disease of the self-cherishing mind, and Shunyata, or Wisdom realizing the ultimate nature of reality, is like a most powerful sword, capable of cutting through the root of all distorted thoughts and enabling the seeker to accomplish nirvana or ultimate freedom. The integrated practice of the three ultimately make it possible for one to achieve full enlightenment or Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. In this retreat Resident monk Venerable Lobsang and Venerable Woser will elaborate on the three aspects based on the text on these three principle aspects of the path by the great master Tsongkhapa (1357-1419).
