During this weekend intensive retreat, Geshe Lobsang Tenzin will guide us through the background and methodology of understanding the many faces of the destructive emotions such as anger, hatred, and violence from the Buddhist perspective, and will offer time-tested techniques for transforming these destructive emotions into patience, tolerance, love, and compassion. Geshe la will unravel the profound meditative techniques practiced for centuries by both Buddhist contemplatives and scholars, and provide guidance on how to make them relevant to our modern day life of struggle, strife, stress, and anxiety. Geshe Lobsang Tenzin’s many years of personal experience of teaching and working with western students will provide first-hand enriching techniques based on his compassion research programs at Emory University. The course will be based on the sixth chapter of the Bodhicharyavatara, A Guide to Ways of the Universal Hero, a masterpiece composed in the 8th century by Acharya Shantideva.
Geshe Lobsang Tenzin was born in Kinnaur, a small Himalayan kingdom adjoining Tibet. He received ordination at the age of fourteen from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and trained for seven years at the Buddhist School of Dialectics in Dharamsala, India. In 1985, Geshe Lobsang entered the Drepung Loseling Monastic College in Southern India where he continued his training. In 1991, he was sent to Atlanta, Georgia by Drepung Monastery to establish Drepung Loseling Institute, which serves as the North American seat of Drepung Loseling Monastery. In 1994, he was awarded the degree of Geshe Lharampa, the highest degree of learning in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, and in 1999 received his PhD from Emory University's Graduate Institute for the Liberal Arts. His dissertation centered on traditional Buddhist and contemporary Western approaches to emotions and their impact on health. He currently serves as the Spiritual Director of Drepung Loseling Institute in Atlanta, and is a senior lecturer at Emory University where he continues to engage in research on mind/body medicine, the function of meditation in promoting health and well-being, and on the benefits of compassion meditation in reducing depression.
