Spiritual practice in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition is deeply rooted in the idea of devotion for an authentic guru who embodies all sources of refuge and personifies all enlightened beings. While each student makes personal connections with contemporary human teachers, for most, if not all Tibetan Buddhists, Guru Rinpoche (Guru Padmasambhava) remains the best-known and revered guru to whom Tibetans, and by extension all students of Tibetan Buddhism, owe the existence of their spiritual tradition. Although Guru Rinpoche is considered to be a historical figure who came to Tibet around the 8th century CE and established the Buddhadharma in the Himalayan region, of most importance is the fact that the reality of his life permeates the present and that he is constantly invoked to assist us on the path. Among many supplications to him, the Seven-Line Prayer is most frequently recited and can be used as a simple yet profound method of guru yoga that leads our minds to enlightenment. In this weekend intensive retreat Bardor Tulku Rinpoche will base his teaching on the Seven-Line Prayer to Guru Rinpoche on the commentary by Jamgon Mipham, White Lotus.
Bardor Tulku Rinpoche was born in Kham, eastern Tibet, in 1950. He is the third incarnation of Terchen Barway Dorje, a treasure revealer who lived at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. At the time of Guru Rinpoche, he was Nupchen Sangye Yeshe, one of Guru Rinpoche’s twenty-five principal disciples. Bardor Tulku Rinpoche received his training under the guidance of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa. In 1976 at the request of His Holiness, Rinpoche came to Woodstock, New York, to help establish Karma Triyana Dharmachakra, the seat of the Karmapa in the United States. After over thirty years in service to His Holiness, Bardor Tulku Rinpoche is now focusing his energy on establishing his lineage center, Kunzang Palchen Ling (KPL). Through Kunzang Palchen Ling, Rinpoche is fulfilling his heartfelt aspiration to offer western students a place where teachings from the four major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism are taught, and particularly, where the treasure teachings of Terchen Barway Dorje can be studied and practiced.
